Arrests made in international Internet crimes investigation

Our Roseville readers may be seeing an increase in news headlines dealing with cybercrimes these days. Cybercrimes or crimes involving the Internet, email and other electronic mediums are part of a relatively new area of law. People accused of Internet crimes may be arrested and tried in both state and federal courts.

Identity theft and credit card fraud are among the most common criminal charges associated with Internet crimes. A recent operation conducted on a worldwide scale targeted people who authorities say were connected in some way to these types of Internet crimes.

The sting operation resulted in the arrests of 24 people in the United States and other countries. The Federal Bureau of Investigation spearheaded the recent effort by creating a fake website to attract people who were allegedly in the business of exchanging identification numbers and passwords to allow others to make illegal purchases with the information. Officials say the sting operation prevented the loss of more than $200 million.

The investigation was apparently underway for approximately two years before the recent arrests. Authorities say they were led to accused individuals through their Internet protocol addresses. Some of the accused even met with undercover law enforcement officials. Those exchanges were reportedly recorded by the authorities.

Facing criminal charges of any kind can be difficult, but prosecutors may be especially aggressive in cases involving Internet crimes. That may be the case with the recent arrests, although only time will tell what the potential penalties could be for the alleged criminal activity.
